DOUBLE HAPPINESS - Slade Media BLOB

DOUBLE HAPPINESS IS A CHINESE ROMANTIC MYTH FROM THE TANG DYNASTY ABOUT A COUPLE WHO FOUND DOUBLE HAPPINESS THROUGH THEIR LOVE AND DESTINY.  DOUBLE HAPPINESS IS A CHINESE CALLIGRAPHIC CHARACTER THAT WAS MISTRANSLATED ON ITS ROUTE INTO ENGLISH.

FROM MYTH TO CHINESE CHARACTER TO ENGLISH WORD, DOUBLE HAPPINESS HAS GRADUALLY ENTERED MAINSTREAM POPULAR CULTURE; RE-SURFACING AS BRANDING FOR CHINESE CIGARETTES, SOY SAUCE, TABLE TENNIS EQUIPMENT, CONDOMS, A BUS COMPANY, AN ARISTS' COLLECTIVE, A FILM, AN AUSTRALIAN ROCK ALBUM AND A RANGE OF DECORATIVE GIFTS FOR WEDDING CEREMONIES AND CHINESE NEW YEAR.

FOR THE EXHIBITION 'SPASTICUS ARTISTICUS' RED T-SHIRTS PRINTED WITH THE PHRASE DOUBLE HAPPINESS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN A STACK AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE GALLERY. ON THEIR ARRIVAL, VISITORS TO THE EXHIBITION ARE INFORMED BY THE GALLERY'S DIRECTOR THAT THEY ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A T-SHIRT IN ORDER TO ENTER AND THEY WILL HAVE TO WEAR IT UNTIL THEY LEAVE; AT WHICH POINT THEY SHOULD RETURN THE T-SHIRT BACK TO THE STACK.

THE T-SHIRTS ENABLE THE VISITOR TO VIEW AN OFFERING BY REBECCA LENNON, CALLED DOUBLE HAPPINESS. THE OFFERING, WHICH IS ACTUALLY JUST THE TITLE DOUBLE HAPPINESS REPEATED IN THE GALLERY BETWEEN 0 AND 200 TIMES PER MOMENTARY ENCOUNTER; TAKES THE APPEARANCE OF GENERIC ART MERCHANDISE ONLY WORN FOR THE DURATION OF THE VIEWERS TIME IN THE EXHIBITION.

Printed Confession - Slade Media BLOB

A performance I did for open studio in which I wrote my printer a letter confessing my unhappiness with its consumption of ink. The letter was then printed.  Each printed letter becomes a signed edition.  I've only got photos (they are a little bit dark) and bellow is roughly what I had written.  Cheers!

"To my dearest HP Deskjet,

It's almost been a year since I picked you out.  You were the cheapest, most reliable and you came with a set of inks.  When I got you home I couldn't wait to unwrap you and print something out.  Remember how we printed the Google map together?  Things were great!

In the last few months, I've noticed something.  Please don't be offended.  I'm convinced you have an inking problem.  I've tried to get you to cut back.  I wasn't asking for quick drafts because I was in a rush.  It's not that I don't want to spend time with you it's just that you spit pages out so aggressively sometimes and I'm worried you're going to ruin our prints.

It probably doesn't help that I've been seeing the Epson Stylus at school.  I know how insecure you are about that but they print A3 on a flat rate and it's never a high bill.

Recently when we've printed together, I've been watching your ink levels.  I get scared when they drop.  I think back to the last time I went out to get you a refill and how expensive it was.  I can't be wasting my time running around trying to find you cheaper ink.  I hate to say this but if this is going to work, you're going to have to meet me half way.

All my love,

Natasha  "

Here's a photo of my recent performance at WW Gallery, for those of you who missed it. The video shows a hand repeatedly letting go of a handful of ash, and the candle is battery powered with a plastic flame. Thanks to Natasha for the photo!
